Reach for the light
The grandiose name for this secret group is something of a joke, a dare, and a slap in the face of the established hierarchy all at once. Dedicated to the being known as Lucifer, who is revered as the Lightbringer and viewed as a symbol of individuality, personal evolution, enlightenment and wisdom, and shedding the constraints of morality and society, the Seekers believe that God the Creator has abandoned this world and universe, and that the next God will be Lucifer who will ascend to glory and raise up those that have served him well.
Because of their belief in this eventual ascension, the Seekers are often considered to be some of the most assiduous of the secret societies. Their faith gives them literal power and the will to suffer through incredible adversity in order to overcome. In fact, the Seekers believe that adversity is the only means by which they can shed the constraints which hold them, that struggle is a fire which purifies and refines them in order to set them onto the correct path and to free their souls from the struggles of the world.
Many modern Judeo-Christian groups would consider the Seekers to be a Satanic occult group, if they knew about the Seekers, but the Seekers do not revere Lucifer-Satan in his Christian role as the Devil.
History
The Lightbringer has existed as a concept since some of the earliest days of the world, when humans first began to look out over the stars and dream up stories for them, tying him to the planet now recognized as Venus, which is one of the last stars to fade in the wake of the coming dawn. Linked in the bible to the fall of the rebel angel Lucifer, the nature and evolution of the Seekers has gone in accordance with the nature and view of the planet Venus. In the early days of the Christian religion, the followers of the the Lightbringer were early scientists and philosophers who believed that knowledge was the light offered by the Lightbringer. As time moved on, the Seekers underwent several evolutions. In the 15th and 16th centuries, a group of the Seekers split away from the main body to form the Illuminati, and the Seekers permitted this divergence because above all things, the Lightbringer is a symbol of personal freedom.
The history of the Seekers is never quite clear, for there have been and remain many sects which branch off the Seekers, or diverge in other ways.
Purpose & Goals
Overall the purpose of the Seekers is to increase their own power in order to be more useful to the next God. To that end they embrace both right-and-left-hand paths to magical knowledge and are willing and able to do horrible and wonderful things in service to this goal. The Seekers do not discriminate based on supernatural nature or innate gifts, and so they have a broad and diverse skill set open to them at need.
- Embrace Power - The Seekers believe that the easiest way to be more useful is to acquire more power. In pursuit of power, the Seekers are ruthless and single-minded, willing to do just about everything. Their very creed discards the notion of morality, seeing it as a constraint on their personal freedom, so the limits and extent to which any individual Seeker is willing to engage in questionable behaviors is nearly impossible to predict.
- Gather Knowledge - Knowledge is the key to power, and for the Seekers the pursuit of knowledge is often times more consuming than their need to acquire power. It might even be argued that their first goal is to obtain knowledge, for knowledge is power. Seekers will chase any scrap of hidden lore, deal with all sorts of unsavory creatures in order to learn their secrets, and are willing to go digging into ancient tombs and forbidden temples to find more knowledge that they lack. They are typically unwilling to share this accumulated knowledge without also getting some in return.
Ranks & Hierarchy
- The Demiurge - The Leader of all of the Seekers is rumored to be immortal, and unchanged from the initial founding of the order in days so long past few records survive. What, if anything but human, the Demiurge might be is generally unknown and magical attempts to discern the true nature or identity of the Demiurge have met with failure and death.
- The Maledictum - Supposedly a Council which is responsible for orchestrating the search for lore and information, and the preservation of the secrets which have been amassed by the Seekers. The Council advises the Demiurge on the state of the Seekers and enacts the Demiurge’s pronouncements.
- The Librarians - There is a Librarian for almost every single major city in the world whose primary goal is to maintain a storehouse of all of the events of a city, supernatural or otherwise, as well as profiles and activity logs of the supernatural denizens of a city. Sometimes referred to as Monitors by younger generations, the Librarians are responsible for local archives.
- Watchers - A Watcher is a basic member of the Seekers, and despite the name they do not just watch, but are typically where the Librarians get all of their information from. Watchers have a duty to research, categorize, and document their own affairs in regards to magic or lore learned, as well as the activities of their various factions.
