Foxes

Mythic Origins

Legend tells of a giant fire fox named Tulikettu who lived in the snowy hills of the old Nordic lands near the arctic sea. He was fast as the wind, moving so swiftly that where his fur touched the snow, magical sparks flared and rose into the sky, forming the Aurora Borealis. It was every hunter's dream to catch the fox, believing that the one who did would be rewarded with wealth and prosperity for the rest of their lives.

In turn, Tulikettu could not simply be fast, but had to be clever and cunning as well to avoid the traps set for him. His sense of smell and eyesight grew keener. His fur turning white in winter to match the blanched landscape, and back to ruddy hues when the snow melted. So too did Tulikettu adapt to a new hunting style that was both effective for catching his prey but also for teasing the hunters who could never catch the swift-footed trickster.

Unable to believe in a fox that could create the northern lights and never be outsmarted by mankind, many decided their origins lie in China where they bore nine-tails. While a hunter may not be able to catch the fox, they could snag a tail and thus gain a boon for a short time. After a great lycanthrope purge in the area employed mages to help eradicate non-humans, Werefoxes reportedly scattered and can now be found all across the globe.

Leadership & Social Structure

Werefoxes tend to be solitary creatures with no formal hierarchical structure or centralized leadership. Males and females may opt to mate and stay together. If they produce offspring or opt to adopt other Werefoxes into their group, they will operate as a small family unit, expecting that everyone will venture off on their own path eventually. A group of Werefoxes is called a Skulk, symbolizing their penchant for distraction and misdirection that lets them elude most threats.

"Let's be perfectly clear, shall we. The fox is not a little orange puppy dog with doe eyes and a waggly tail. It's a disease-ridden wolf with the morals of a psychopath and the teeth of a great white shark." ~Jeremy Clarkson

General Traits & Abilities

Most foxes adapt extremely well to urban environments, able to blend in, raise families, make homes, and provide for all their needs with as much notice as anyone else would get.

They are known as tricksters who use magics on their bodies to alter their appearance and even turn invisible sometimes. They use trickery, deceit, and magic to misdirect their foes in order to escape unscathed. Given their smaller size compared to most other lycanthropes, werefoxes must use brain over brawn, but they are not fully incompetent predators either. They can create enough energy to short-circuit electronics and fire bolts of the same energy at threats and prey alike.
