Boars

Mythic Origins

There are tales from all over the world about giant boar, boars touched by the Gods that needed to be slain by the ancient heroes. Most Wereboars trace their spiritual ancestry to one of those great tusked beasts of yore. Of late though, there has been a trend amongst the Boar populace to trace their origins to the Hawaiian myth of Kamapua’a, a demigod born of Hina and tied to Lono, the God of agriculture.

Kamapua’a is noted for his defiance of all authority, his boldness and untamed nature, an archetype of the savage nature of early man yet with a tender streak and a hunger for the good things in life – adventure, love, and sensual pleasure. Kamapua’a also has a reputation as a mischievous rascal and a punisher of social wrongs.

One legend tells the tale of a man that beat his wife to death and buried her beneath Kamapua'a while he was in tree form. Because he saw that the woman had been a good person, he raised her to new life, but damned her husband to death. Another, with Kampua’a acting as the Trickster, tells that one day Kamapua’a stole some chickens from Olopana, who was enraged at the theft. Olopana sent his warriors after Kamapua’a, who, along with his own followers, fought back, until it became clear they could not win. Kamapua’a took his followers and fled until they came up against a waterfall where they were seemingly cornered. It was at this point that Kamapua’a shifted into a hog which his followers used to climb to the next level of the falls and to freedom. His pig-form dammed up the water of Kaliuwa‘a where they were. Olopana's men pursued, and as they trekked up Kaliuwa‘a, Kamapua‘a released the water, killing all but Olopana. Olopana fled to Wai‘anae where he ultimately lost to Kamapua‘a.

Leadership & Social Structure

Most groups of the Wereboars are known as Sounders and are led by a single Matriarch who carries the title of Erymanthia. Male dominated sounders tend to be younger and are led by a Calydon. Both roles are assisted in their duties by the:

  • Veteris/Vetara - The Sounder’s second-in-command. Almost always a female Wereboar. Typically, any given Sounder will only have a single Veteris/Vetara, but in large Sounders it is not uncommon for there to be multiples.
  • Moccus/Mocca - The Sounder’s warrior-in-chief, who commands the Wereboars in battle and governs security of the Sounder's home and turf.
    • Moccus/Mocca is also likely to be the breeding partner or mate of the Erymanthia or the Calydon, with the Wereboars untroubled by homosexuality.
    • The Moccus/Mocca can be assisted by other males commonly called Asterixi, who serve as lesser commanders and guardians.
  • Inishishi - Usually not a Wereboar, almost always female, and is tasked with the spiritual and physical health of the Sounder, usually cast in a role that combines the aspects of Priestess and Sacred Whore.

Male Wereboar sometimes form all male-gangs or groups which are known as Bebops and typically resemble modern gang associations.

General Traits & Abilities

Wereboars are associated with abundance, courage, and power, along with conflict and disorder. Boars are highly adaptable to environments that many would consider unfriendly, as demonstrated by their thickened hides, resistance to heat, and ability to devour anything without ill effect. Unlike some lycan species who produce warriors with a certain finesse to their ferocity, Wereboars are usually simply savage, using tusks, grunts, and powerful body charges to subdue their foes.
