It's Dangerous to go Alone. Take This.
Magic items are rare treasures which require considerable magical power to craft, but also require a significant investment in terms of resources and time. For that reason alone, they are often considered to be "priceless," being valued heirlooms with histories that stretch back hundreds of years, if not longer. While occurring often enough that the appearance of a magic weapon or a healing charm is not considered to be of devastating import, they are still rare enough that people take notice of and show interest in magical weapons. Magi have learned discretion when it comes to their magical items and reveal them only in desperation or from a place of trust.

Making a magic item
Making a magic item is no easy task. It requires hours, if not days, of preparation. The item to be enchanted must be subject to rites and rituals, dedicated and marked in order to contain the energy it will be imbued with. It is preferential to make a magic item out of an object that was made by the hand of the Magi doing the enchanting, but such isn't always practical or possible. Regardless, the Magi invests a singificant period of time in laying the foundation for the enchantments on an item. The more enchantments the item is to bear, or the more functions the Magi intends for the item to do, the more time must be invested.
