What is Hell?
Only a few souls have ever been to Hell and returned to the world of the living. Fewer still returned and been able to communicate effectively about what they saw, but what they speak of is a place of never-ending pain, of torment where the only release is to become like your tormentors, and where the only pleasures are violent ones. Even for those souls that are lucky to escape, be rescued, or returned to life, Hell leaves a blatant scar on their souls, a wound that never quite heals and which mars the person's psyche for the rest of their life.
Hell itself takes many forms and has many different layers. Each layer is overseen or ruled by a particular Prince of Hell who manipulates the reality of their layer to reflect their personal tastes and aesthetics.
Some Princes prefer their layers to resemble an endless line, with souls queued up eternally. Others prefer more visceral elements with their layers resembling black nothing interspersed with crawling horrors and souls being stretched out by chains. Other princes prefer a more traditional look, a lake of fire and brimstone where souls burn forever.
